A single-stage compressor is on or off; a variable-speed compressor runs at whatever fraction of capacity the hour demands. On the prairie that buys three things. It holds more capacity at low temperature, which is the headline. It runs long, gentle cycles that keep indoor temperature steady through the wind-driven swings of a Nebraska winter. And in July it dehumidifies properly, a dividend the prewar stock of Dundee and Field Club has never gotten from window units, in a metro whose summers argue for the cooling half of the machine as loudly as the winters argue for the heating half. The metro has run heat pumps for decades, and the most common specification error is copying the dying machine's nameplate onto the new quote. The old unit was sized in a different equipment era, for a leakier version of the house, by a rule of thumb, and its resistance strips covered every sin it had. The new machine deserves the one document that voids the trap: a fresh room-by-room load calculation, the first test in our contractor guide. Matching Machine to Stock

In the twenty-to-forty degree band with moisture in the air, the long shoulder of a prairie winter, every heat pump frosts its outdoor coil and periodically reverses to clear it. A well-controlled machine defrosts briefly and quietly on demand; a crude one defrosts on a timer, steams, groans, and drafts cool air that alarms first-winter owners into service calls the system did not need. Ask the bidder directly: how does this model decide to defrost, and what will the house notice? Fluency in the answer is fluency in the climate.
Ratings, Read in the Right Order
SEER2 measures cooling efficiency, HSPF2 measures seasonal heating efficiency, and neither is the design-night capacity figure this guide keeps demanding. Use the efficiency ratings to compare operating cost between candidate machines, and note that OPPD's tiers turn on SEER, so the ratings carry money here. But use the published low-temperature capacity table to decide whether a machine belongs on your house at all. The cold-climate designation is a screen; the capacity table is the contract. Refrigerant on any current quote should read R-454B, and a bid built on outgoing equipment is a bid built on someone's warehouse problem.
The Specification, One Paragraph Long
A defensible Omaha quote names the model number; attaches the room-by-room load calculation; prints the machine's published below-zero capacity beside that load; specifies variable-speed operation, R-454B, and the backup strategy with strip sizing; records duct findings or head placement; confirms the panel carries the new circuits; and shows the OPPD rebate as a line with the SEER tier named.
